About Dulong River Valley Official Route
Dulong River Valley Official Route names the officially designated visitor route through the Dulongjiang (Derung River) valley in Gongshan Derung and Nu Autonomous County, Yunnan — the sole settlement area of the Derung ethnic minority, reached by a road tunnel under the Gaoligong mountains completed in 2014.
The Dulongjiang valley lies within the core zone of the Three Parallel Rivers World Natural Heritage area and, according to the Gongshan county government's own tourism page, is the sole settlement area of China's Derung (Dulong) ethnic minority. A road tunnel beneath the Gaoligong range was completed in 2014. The county tourism bureau describes the valley's forest cover as 93 percent and states that 478 vertebrate species and 2,128 vascular plant species have been recorded there. The Derung community's Kaqiuwa New Year festival, held from the 27th to the 29th day of the twelfth lunar month, includes communal gong-and-drum dancing; a 2020 posting by the county tourism bureau recorded that 24 facially tattooed Derung women — tattooing once being a customary practice among Derung women — were still living at that time, aged between 80 and 108.
