About Gaozhuang Xishuangjing District
The district's Dai name means 'nine towers, twelve villages,' and it sits at the core of Xishuangbanna's Lancang River ethnic-culture tourism resort zone, functioning as a gateway combining culture-tourism, leisure, entertainment and commercial/residential uses, according to China Culture Daily. Its Star Light Night Market, themed around specialty crafts and folk food, opened on 1 October 2013 and developed into a night-time culture, leisure and entertainment district drawing on Dai culture and the wider Mekong region.
In April 2020 the market was named to Yunnan's first batch of night-economy landmarks, and in 2021 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism named the district to its first national list of night-time culture and tourism consumption clusters.
