About Laoshan Patriotic Education Base
Malipo Martyrs Cemetery, founded in February 1979 four kilometres north of the county seat, covers 105 mu and comprises a memorial square, a burial ground for 967 martyrs from 19 provinces and 19 ethnic groups (aged 16 to 49), and the Laoshan Combat Memorial Hall. It was listed a Yunnan provincial key martyrs'-memorial-building protection site in 1988 and a national key martyrs'-memorial-building protection site in 2009. Its 19.99-metre People's Heroes Monument carries calligraphy by Mao Zedong on the front and Deng Xiaoping on the back.
Laoshan itself rises to 1,422.2 metres on the border line west of Chuantou village, Tianbao township. Chinese forces recaptured the summit on 28 April 1984 after 18 days of fighting; a summit tablet reading 'long live the Laoshan spirit' was inscribed by General Zhang Aiping, then State Councillor and Minister of National Defence, during a 1987 visit.
