About Nakeli Tea Horse Road
Nakeli's name comes from Dai, meaning 'the good field by the bridge'; its position on the route gave it a multi-ethnic population. Caravans travelling the Tea-Horse Road rested here before continuing north toward Dali, Lijiang and Tibet, or south toward Jinghong, Yiwu and onward to Laos. Surviving relics from that trade include a wind-and-rain bridge, a horse-washing platform, a stone horse-watering trough, horse stepping-stones, a mill house and a stretch of cobblestone road.
Nakeli has been rated a national AAAA scenic area and named one of China's Distinctive Ethnic-Minority Villages, recognition attributed by Xinhua to its Tea-Horse Road culture, farming heritage and ethnic character.
