About Pu'er National Park Xiniuping
Pu'er National Park lies 38 km south of Pu'er city in the transition zone between tropical and subtropical climate, covering 320,000 mu between elevations of 1,530 m and 1,708 m, and holds 67 nationally protected plant and animal species including the Asian elephant. Within it, the Xiniuping scenic area is rated a national AAAA tourist attraction, with 812 recorded wildlife species including 57 under national protection (10 first-class, 47 second-class); typical protected wildlife there include the gibbon, red panda, Chinese giant salamander and egret.
The 'Rhino Flat' name comes from a rhinoceros-population reconstruction project, under which seven white rhinoceroses were introduced from South Africa. The wider park has also bred red pandas successfully in the wild; a cub born there in mid-2021 was reported as the park's first natural wild birth of the species.
