About Tengchong Volcano Geopark
The cones take shapes including truncated cone, shield, dome, pyramid and composite; aerial views show most summits flat, gentle or concave rather than sharply peaked, reflected in the local saying that in Tengyue prefecture nine mountains in ten have no head. The planned scenic area covers 62.61 square kilometres centred on sights including Dakongshan, Xiaokongshan, Heikongshan, the columnar-jointed Shenzhugu valley and the Heiyu River; away from the cones themselves the ground is covered by volcanic lava, and the Longchuan River gorge runs along the area's eastern edge between basalt walls with columnar jointing, which the Baoshan tourism authority describes as rare within China and gives the reputation of a natural volcanic-geology museum. The same authority describes the area as Tengchong's largest, best-preserved, most concentrated and most complete volcanic landform district, run as a national geopark combining scientific research and education, sightseeing, leisure, outdoor sport, eco-tourism and cultural tourism.
Basalt formed from solidified lava is a common building material in Tengchong: the Ming-dynasty city wall was built of it and served as a wartime defensive barrier, and the basalt lanes, temples, ancestral halls and memorial arches of nearby Heshun old town have survived 600 years of weathering.
