About Lingyin Temple and Feilai Peak
Lingyin Temple and Feilai Peak form a Buddhist and rock-carving landscape in the hills west of central Hangzhou. The temple traces its foundation to the Eastern Jin period and remains a place of religious practice. Feilai Peak adds a different kind of heritage immediately around the temple setting: Buddhist figures carved into natural rock faces and caves.
Hangzhou's heritage record dates the surviving rock-carving groups from the Five Dynasties through the Yuan period. Figures are distributed around named caves and along the streamside cliffs, so the carvings were created in several phases rather than as one uniform installation. The temple halls and the outdoor sculpture therefore need to be understood separately, even when included in the same visit.
Allow time for both the stonework and the active temple spaces. Read nearby interpretation before comparing a carving's posture, surrounding figures and treatment of the rock. Stay behind protective barriers and follow local instructions on photography and worship. Use the current official visitor arrangements for the wider scenic area; older accounts that describe separate admission products may no longer match the present system.
What to look for
- An active Buddhist temple with a history reaching back to the Eastern Jin period.
- Rock-cut figures from several historical periods around caves and streamside cliffs.
- The contrast between temple architecture and sculpture integrated into natural stone.
