About Linghu Ancient Town
At Wangjiamenqian, the Fei house’s tall horse-head walls contrast with the neighbouring Zhang residence and the decorated windows of Wenruizhai, once a printing business. Farther through the old lanes, Anlan Bridge gives the canal setting a clear architectural focus. This is a lived-in town rather than a single enclosed attraction, so inspect façades and public passages without assuming private homes admit visitors.
The town developed from a market between an embankment and Xiuxi Bridge (秀溪桥), constructed before 825. Its name refers to the water chestnuts cultivated in surrounding lakes. During the Southern Song period, new bridges, roads and offices handling tea and wine taxes accompanied the growth of the settlement. Formal town administration was established in 1382.
By the Jiajing (嘉靖) and Wanli (万历) eras, silk production and pond-based fish farming were widespread. The surrounding water network supported mulberry embankments and fishponds as characteristic forms of land use. During the Qing period, county officials and tax offices were based here, and the town later housed county government offices between 1949 and 1954.
