About Nianbadu
Its street and Feng Stream are lined with buildings combining architectural influences from those regions, with surviving carvings, painted decoration and inscriptions. This mixed character reflects a settlement shaped by through traffic rather than a single uniform local style. Follow the stream and main historic street, then inspect the courtyards that are open. Nearby mountain passes require separate journeys and are not part of a short town circuit.
The name Nianbadu comes from its position as the twenty-eighth of 44 local administrative divisions established in 1071. The settlement was formally constituted as a town in 1931. It received designation as a Zhejiang Provincial Historic and Cultural Town in 1997 and as a Chinese Historic and Cultural Town in 2007.
The town contains 142 surnames and 13 dialects, alongside a two-kilometre historic street and 36 Ming and Qing residences. Its broader building stock includes more than 70 structures from the late Qing and Republican periods. A first phase of conservation and development began in 2008, addressing this surviving historic townscape.
