About Ningbo

Tianyi Ge preserves the setting of a private library and garden, while Moon Lake provides a broader public water landscape. At Sanjiangkou, the Yong, Yao and Fenghua rivers meet, connecting the city’s inland waterways with its maritime identity. Begin with Tianyi Ge and Moon Lake, then plan a separate connection to the confluence rather than treating the entire municipality as one compact historic quarter.

Human settlement in the area extends back to the Neolithic period, while the city dates its foundation to 738, when a prefecture called Mingzhou was established. The name Ningbo was adopted in 1381, expressing the idea of calm seas. The city holds the formal designation of National Historic and Cultural City.

The municipality rises into hills and mountains in the southwest, with plains occupying much of its central and northern areas. Jurassic volcanic activity helped establish its underlying landforms, while later marine advances and retreats created coastal plains. The northern Sanbei Plain (三北平原) also expanded through extensive dyke construction beginning in the Northern Song dynasty.
