About Taizhou Museum
The historical exhibition places the region’s material culture in context, while the folk-life displays compare valley communities, wet lowlands and seafaring settlements through objects and reconstructed working environments. This geographical approach makes the museum useful before travelling farther into Taizhou: agricultural tools, maritime equipment and domestic settings show how different livelihoods developed within the same region.
The museum project was proposed in 2004, construction began in December 2009, and the institution formally opened on 12 July 2016 after a trial opening earlier that month. Building the collection required donations, purchases and other acquisitions. Before the museum building was ready, staff converted offices into storage rooms and borrowed storage space at Huangyan Museum (黄岩博物馆) to care for the objects.
The four-storey building provides around 6,000 square metres of exhibition space. Temporary exhibitions occupy the first floor, with permanent history and folk-culture displays on the second and third floors and a gallery devoted to private collections on the fourth. An initial shortage of objects encouraged an emphasis on storytelling, using displays that join physical objects to murals and scenes, together with projected films.
What to look for
