About Wenling Changyu Dongtian national scenic spot

The walls, corridors and open voids reveal extraction rather than natural cave formation. Guanxi Cave adds a large carved stone bowl, while other managed chambers illustrate different spatial results of the same industry. Compare tool-cut surfaces and the shapes left by quarrying before choosing extra attractions. The scenic area contains separate groups of excavations, so entry to one section does not imply an underground connection to all the others.

Stone extraction here began in the Northern and Southern Dynasties and continued across some 1,500 years. The resulting landscape contains 28 groups of excavations and more than 1,314 chambers over 3.3 square kilometres. The chambers include Shuangmen (双门硐), Shuiyun (水云硐) and Lingxiao (灵霄硐), alongside the other quarry spaces. The excavated stone was cut into slabs.

Together with nearby Fangshan (方山), the excavations form the Fangshan–Changyu Dongtian scenic area, which holds National Key Scenic Area and national AAAA tourist area designations. The site was listed as a national scenic area in 2005 and received National Mining Park status in 2010, formally recognizing its quarrying landscape.

What to look for

  • Quarried walls, corridors and chambers make the former stone-extraction process visible.
