SIM & internet

Choose connectivity around what your trip needs: mobile data, a local phone number, bank verification messages or several destinations. Compare your device and provider's terms before buying a plan.

Roaming with your home providerConsider this when keeping your existing line is useful and your provider offers suitable coverage for the route.China coverage, activation, included data, calls and SMS, spending controls and charges on any other active line.
Travel eSIMConsider this for a compatible, unlocked phone when the plan offers the data service your trip needs.Exact device model and purchase region, destination coverage, activation timing, hotspot terms, and whether the plan is data-only.
Local mainland SIMConsider this when a local line would be useful and you can complete the operator's in-person requirements.Passport registration, compatible device, voice and SMS inclusions, top-up arrangements and service-counter availability.
01

Decide whether you need data or a phone number

List the services you expect to use, including bank verification and booking contacts. A data-only plan is not a substitute for a line that receives calls or SMS. Ask your home provider what happens to incoming messages when another line supplies mobile data.

02

Compare plans against your actual route

Check each destination on the coverage list, especially if the journey includes Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan. Also compare plan duration, the point when validity begins, data allowances and tethering terms. Do not assume that every product labelled China has identical coverage or features.

03

Keep an arrival fallback ready

Save your hotel address, reservation details and transfer instructions before travel. If choosing a local SIM, check the arrival airport's current counter information and opening hours. Use the setup guide for device checks and mobile-data settings once you have selected your connection.

04

Will my usual websites and messages work?

Having mobile data does not mean every service will work. Google and several overseas social and messaging services, including WhatsApp, are restricted on normal mainland networks. Prepare another way to contact your accommodation and travel companions, and save hotel addresses, tickets and booking details offline before arrival. Ask your provider about the specific services and destinations its plan supports. A travel eSIM, roaming label or VPN claim is not a guarantee that every app will be available throughout your trip.
