About Dabaodao Cultural and Leisure District

Jiaozhou Road divides the quarter into two halves that are being given different characters. Haibo Road and Gaomi Road are the main streets of the southern section and reopened in April and October 2022; that half is planned around daytime use, with creative retail, restaurants, interactive attractions and exhibition spaces. The northern section is planned around the evening, with restaurants, music bars, entertainment and guesthouses. A further upgrade of Guangxingli in cooperation with the Central Conservatory of Music was also planned.

The building type that gives the quarter its character is the liyuan, the courtyard tenement of old Qingdao. The northern section alone contains more than thirty of them, and their repair was scheduled to finish by the end of May 2023, while facades of liyuan in the southern section were being upgraded at the same time. On 27 December 2023 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism named the quarter, under the title Dabaodao cultural, tourism and leisure block, in the third national group of tourism and leisure blocks, assessed against the national industry standard for grading such blocks.

What to look for

• The liyuan courtyard tenements of the northern section, more than thirty of them, repaired in the 2023 programme
• Haibo Road and Gaomi Road, the two main streets of the southern section, reopened in 2022
• Guangxingli, the compound singled out for a further cultural programme with the Central Conservatory of Music
• The contrast between the daytime southern half, given to retail and exhibitions, and the evening northern half
