About Shilaoren Beach

The Shilaoren scenic area is made up of three parts, the reef-rock area, the beach area and the coastal park area, and covers 3.56 square kilometres in all, of which 1.17 is land and 2.39 is sea. Besides the beach it takes in the Shilaoren shoreline, the Sculpture Park, Xiaomai Island, Chi Island and the inshore waters along the coast. It is named for the Shilaoren, the Old Stone Man, a sea stack standing off this shore, and for the legend attached to it. Of the fifteen scenic resources recorded for the area, only two are ranked first class: the Shilaoren reef rock and this bathing beach.

The planning documents give an idea of how the shore is managed. The first-class protection zone covers 0.13 square kilometres of land, chiefly the Shilaoren beach and Chi Island, together with 2.33 square kilometres of sea that includes all the coastal reef rock and the beach below high spring tide. The beach section is designated for sea bathing, beach recreation, water sports, performances, festival events and visitor services. A detailed plan for the whole scenic area covering 2024 to 2035 was drawn up by the Qingdao Laoshan Scenic Area Administration and published for public comment by the Shandong Provincial Department of Natural Resources.

What to look for

  • The Shilaoren sea stack, the eroded rock pillar offshore that gives the beach its name
  • The coastal reef platform running along the shoreline, listed as a second-class scenic resource
  • Xiaomai Island, at the western end of the same scenic area, noted for its sunsets
  • Sunrise over the Shilaoren rock, one of the scenic resources recorded for the area
  • The Sculpture Park and the Shilaoren coastal park along the landward edge of the beach
