About Weifang World Kite Museum

Weifang World Kite Museum (潍坊世界风筝博物馆) is a museum devoted to kites, on Xingzheng Street (行政街) in Kuiwen District (奎文区) of Weifang (潍坊), Shandong.

Work on the museum started on 1 July 1987 and it opened on 1 April 1989; its director, Li Naigang (李乃刚), told Guangming Daily that it was the first specialist kite museum in China. The 8,100 m² building takes its outline from the dragon-head centipede kite of Weifang: an assembled ceramic dragon runs the full length of the ridge, and the roof is covered in glazed tiles of peacock blue. The museum is rated a national AAA scenic area.

Eight halls hold more than 1,000 kites of the five main forms (tube, board, hard-wing, soft-wing and string kites) and over 300 kite relics and documents. Displays cover the history and uses of kites, Weifang's own schools of kite making, fine kites from other parts of China and from abroad, and the Weifang International Kite Festival (潍坊国际风筝会). A renovation paid for by the city from 2011, spread over three years, added a multi-purpose hall of almost 1,000 m² with a multimedia section and a folk-craft area. Guangming Daily reported in 2025 that a huge dragon-head centipede kite hangs in the atrium and that the second floor holds a digital space with a VR room and an XR motion cinema.

The craft on show is a national intangible cultural heritage item: kite making (Weifang kites) entered the first national list in 2006. The heritage listing traces Weifang kites to Yangjiabu village (杨家埠) in the early Ming, where villagers painted kites with the paper and colours used for their woodblock New Year prints; by the Qianlong reign (1736–1795) kites had become a major local handicraft. Hard-wing kites are the most common type, while centipede string kites, up to more than 360 m long, are held in highest regard.
