About St. Michael's Cathedral
The church occupies a site of 11,480 square metres with a floor area of 1,877 square metres. Its plan is cruciform, and a spire rises on each wing of the main body to a height of 56 metres, each carrying a cross 4.5 metres tall. The twin towers are what make the building visible from the streets of the old town below.
Inside, the hall is 18 metres high and holds a thousand people. The decoration is in an Italian Renaissance manner rather than a Gothic one, and the vault carries painted religious images. Shandong listed the church as a provincial cultural heritage protection unit in 1992, and in 2006 it was made a national key cultural heritage protection unit as one of the group of German buildings in Qingdao.
