About Zhujiayu Old Village

The settlement is more than six hundred years old and is laid out along a valley, with a paved lane running inward from the entrance gate known as the Limen, the Gate of Rites. Reports on the village count close to two hundred old buildings of various sizes, ninety-nine stone bridges and sixty-six wells and springs within the village area. A Wenchang Pavilion stands at the northern end and a Kuixing Tower at the southern end, the two scholarly structures that bracket the village. Zhu Family Old Street forms its core, and courtyard wells, openwork window lattices and weathered grey brick are the details visitors are pointed towards.

Zhujiayu sits inside a wider conservation effort. Zhangqiu District holds eight nationally listed traditional villages and fourteen provincially listed ones, more than any other district or county in Jinan, and it also has two Chinese historical and cultural famous villages. In April 2022 it was chosen for the first national group of demonstration districts for clustered protection and reuse of traditional villages. Under that programme 113 traditional buildings across the district have been repaired. In Zhujiayu itself the work of the early 2010s concentrated on the Zhu clan ancestral hall, the Zhu family North Tower, the house of a jinshi degree-holder, a girls' school and the former residence of Li Jingyi.

What to look for

• The Limen, the gate through which the old paved lane enters the village
• The Wenchang Pavilion at the north end and the Kuixing Tower at the south end
• Zhu Family Old Street, the core section of the village, and the Zhu clan ancestral hall and Zhu family North Tower restored along it
• The small stone bridges and the stone-lined wells and springs distributed through the village
• The Chuang Guandong themed exhibition hall installed in the former Shanyin Primary School, covering three centuries of northeastward migration
