About Qingpu Museum
The building is formed from intersecting elliptical volumes, producing a butterfly-like plan.
The ancient-culture displays connect Qingpu with discoveries at Songze and Fuquanshan and with successive prehistoric cultures of the lower Yangtze. The water-culture section turns to settlement, everyday life and local traditions. These two themes offer a useful structure for the visit: first understand early settlement, then look at how waterways shaped the later district.
The museum was established on 1 October 1958. Its exhibition area covers 3,600 square metres, with more than 1,000 cultural relics on display. The historical sequence presented in the galleries includes the Majiabang (马家浜), Songze (崧泽), Liangzhu (良渚) and Maqiao (马桥) cultures, continuing into the Spring and Autumn period and the Han dynasties. Later material introduces Qingpu's folk customs during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The exhibitions also present local figures from Qingpu, extending the museum's account beyond archaeological objects to the people of the district.
