About Dayunyuan Temple

Dayunyuan is a Buddhist temple in Shihui Village, Pingshun County, founded during the Five Dynasties period. Its Amitabha Hall, known as Mituo Dian, is the main reason to seek it out. The building combines early timber construction with rare surviving wall paintings from the same broad historical era.

The Changzhi account describes painting techniques that continue late Tang traditions: expressive dark outlines, coloured washes and selected gilded details. Surviving fragments should be understood as the remains of a larger painted setting. Their condition makes the relationship between art, architecture and conservation especially important.

A useful visit begins outside with the hall’s broad eaves and timber supports, then turns to the painted surfaces if an interior visit is permitted. Let the interpretation identify scenes and surviving sections. Following one clearly explained fragment can be more rewarding than trying to make a complete narrative out of damaged areas.
