About Hougou Old Village
In 2002, the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association chose Hougou for field investigation as it prepared a national cultural-heritage rescue project. The surviving farming settlement gave researchers a connected village setting to document, rather than a collection of isolated monuments.
Stone-paved lanes climb through the settlement towards the old stage at its centre. The Guanyin Hall and Guandi Temple preserve another part of its communal history through their mural decoration. Researchers returning in 2015 described repairs to the stage and protection of the temple murals, making conservation itself part of the village's recent story.
