About Jiwang Temple
The temple was formerly known as Houji Shrine. Its surviving buildings come from the Yuan and Qing periods, arranged symmetrically along a north–south axis and facing south. The historic layout gave the front court to Houji and the rear court to his mother, Jiang Yuan, connecting the worship of an agricultural ancestor with that of his mother.
The decoration brings together woodcarving, stone carving and glazed ceramics. These different materials give the compound much of its architectural interest, alongside the relationship between its two courts.
