About Wannian Ice Cave

The cave narrows near its entrance and opens into a broader chamber below. Ice coats much of the interior, forming hanging icicles and stalactites as well as upward-growing ice columns. These are frozen-water features within a cave in limestone and dolomite.

A 2015 study in The Cryosphere modelled how this ice can persist where average annual outdoor temperatures exceed freezing. It identified efficient winter cooling through air circulation and much slower inward heat transfer during warmer seasons. Melting and refreezing also buffer temperature change. This explains the cave through its shape and seasonal heat exchange.

What to look for

  • Hanging ice formations and upward-growing ice columns
  • Ice coating the rock chamber
  • The contrast between the narrow upper opening and broader interior
