About Baisha Bay, Hengchun
Baisha is a small bay on the western side of the Hengchun Peninsula, named for its pale sand. The beach lies along the coastal road, with darker coral-reef rock at its ends. This is the Baisha coast in Pingtung, distinct from the similarly named Baishawan beach in northern Taiwan.
The contrast between the light sand and the reef margins gives the bay its immediate character. Looking along the curve of the shoreline helps show where the open beach gives way to rock and a much more irregular marine landscape. The national park's account describes varied underwater terrain nearby, but a view from the sand cannot establish safe swimming or diving conditions.
Treat the shore and any organised water activity as separate decisions. A beach walk, a swim and a guided dive require different preparation, and currents around the peninsula can be strong. Stay within the public visitor area, follow the conditions and notices on the day, and use a qualified local operator for an activity that takes you beyond ordinary shore access.
