About Caoling Historic Trail

The Caoling Historic Trail crosses the hills between Yuanwangkeng in New Taipei and Dali in Yilan. It belongs to the historic route network connecting the Taipei area with the northeast coast, giving the walk a transport history as well as a mountain landscape.

Along the route, forest gives way to more exposed ground near the pass. Historic rock inscriptions, including the tiger inscription and Xiong Zhen Man Yan, mark particular places to pause. In suitable conditions, higher viewpoints look toward the coast and Guishan Island.

The hill trail is different from the Old Caoling railway tunnel used for cycling. Published distances also vary with the chosen endpoints and connecting approaches. Use the current trail map to decide whether you are crossing the ridge or returning to the same starting point.

What to look for

  • Rock inscriptions associated with the historic route.
  • The transition from wooded approaches to an exposed pass.
  • Coastal views and seasonal silver-grass scenery when conditions allow.
