About Chihkan Tower
Chihkan Tower is a layered historic site in central Tainan, occupying the location of the Dutch Fort Provintia. Its present appearance grew through later rebuilding and changes of use, so the red-roofed structures visible today should not be mistaken for an intact seventeenth-century European fortress.
The complex includes Haishen Temple, Wenchang Pavilion and the Penghu Academy setting, bringing religious and educational histories into the former administrative site. Look for changes in architectural style and building level: they help show how successive communities reused a politically important place rather than simply preserving one original design.
Stone inscriptions add another layer. Nine imperial steles carried by tortoise-like bixi were moved here from the area near the Great South Gate. Their texts and sculpted supports belong to imperial commemoration, while stories about the creatures belong to the site's folklore. Reading the surviving structures, inscriptions and interpretation together gives a more useful picture than treating Chihkan as a single tower with one construction date.
