About Daxueshan National Forest Recreation Area
Daxueshan National Forest Recreation Area occupies high forested terrain above the Dongshi side of Taichung. The landscape carries a history of timber extraction: the Daxueshan forest operation began in 1958 and helped shape the economies of Dongshi and Fengyuan before the area acquired its recreation role.
At elevations above 2,000 metres, forest character and weather differ markedly from the city below. The forestry authority identifies surviving old cypress stands around the small giant-tree trail and the former timber-hauling route, while the larger Xueshan sacred tree is another named landmark. These places allow the forest's working history and older tree growth to be read in the same landscape.
Birdlife is a major reason to visit, with species such as Mikado pheasant and Swinhoe's pheasant recorded in the area. Their presence is part of a habitat, not a scheduled display. Slow walking, quiet observation and attention to the forest layers offer more than chasing a single photograph. Cloud, mist and changing light can transform the view within a short time, so the forest itself remains the main subject even when distant scenery disappears.

Plan the mountain-road approach from the Dongshi side and select an open forestry route. Carry weather protection and enough time for the return journey; observe birds from a respectful distance without feeding or calling them in.
