About Erkan Traditional Village
Erkan Traditional Village (二崁传统聚落) is a historic settlement on Xiyu Island, with a strong Chen-family association. Its houses and lanes preserve an island residential landscape, while community interpretation introduces everyday life, crafts and local song. The village was designated a traditional settlement preservation area in 2001.
The Chen family residence is a major architectural focus. Expanded in 1910 by two brothers who had prospered in the herbal-medicine trade in Tainan, it combines a substantial courtyard-house arrangement with carefully worked decoration. Woodcarving, painted surfaces and stone details reveal the investment and craftsmanship behind the domestic spaces.
Elsewhere in the village, baoge verses express daily experience and personal feeling in local language. These cultural details make Erkan more than a collection of old walls. Walk the lanes slowly, compare house fronts and read the community displays where available. Some premises remain homes, and the opening of one exhibition room does not imply access to neighbouring houses.
