About Qigu Salt Mountain and Taiwan Salt Museum
Qigu Salt Mountain is a large salt mound on Tainan's coastal plain, where solar salt production once occupied extensive fields. Its bright, steep-sided form is an industrial legacy, shaped by stored salt and subsequent visitor use. The nearby Taiwan Salt Museum is a separate institution associated with the same regional industry.
The Qigu salt works supplied agricultural and industrial demand before solar production ended in 2002. That history links the visible mound with a much larger system of shallow evaporation ponds, seawater management and salt handling. The mound alone does not show the whole production process, so interpretation is useful for understanding what has disappeared from the landscape.
Treat the salt mountain and museum as two different destinations when planning. The official open-data records retrieved for this review still carry a museum renovation-closure notice dating from January 2022; they do not establish a current reopening. The mountain remains the identifiable outdoor landmark in this combined guide, while any museum visit needs a separate check with the institution. Historical photographs of the museum document its building rather than prove present admission.
What to look for
- The salt mound's scale and its industrial rather than geological origin.
- Interpretation of Qigu's former solar-salt works.
- The relationship between the outdoor salt landmark and the separate museum.
