About Tainan Art Museum

Tainan Art Museum occupies the former police-station complex on Nanmen Road in the city's historic centre. The original building was completed in 1931 to a design by Sutejiro Umezawa. Its Art Deco frontage, stepped gable and patterned brick surfaces give the museum a distinctive civic setting before a visitor reaches the galleries.

Restoration joined the historic structure to a modern extension behind it, using a central connection to bring old and new spaces together. Look at the changes in materials, daylight and room proportions as you move between them. The architecture makes the reuse of a former administrative building part of the museum experience, alongside exhibitions and art education.

This needs updating: the museum's 2026 announcement confirms that the former Building 2 has transferred to Tainan National Art Museum, while Tainan Art Museum uses the historic Building 1 as its core base.
