About Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area
Taipingshan (太平山森林游乐区) is a mountain forest recreation area in Yilan's Datong Township, shaped by a century of forestry. Its main settlement stands around 2,000 metres above sea level. Logging began under Japanese administration in 1915, and the former timber landscape became a recreation area in 1983. Railway remains help explain how trees once travelled out of these steep mountains.
The distinctive combination is forest, industrial heritage and upland water. The Bong Bong train follows part of the former Maoxing logging railway, while the Jianqing railway landscape preserves another trace of that network. Cuifeng Lake occupies a separate high mountain basin reached along the scenic road. These are different sections of a large park, with separate walking commitments.
Compare the shaded conifer forest near Taipingshan with the more open lake landscape. Jiu Zhi Ze hot springs lie much lower on the approach road. Choose the forest section that matters most before adding the lake, train and hot springs to the same day.

Getting to Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area
Use the Taipingshan park entrance in Datong, then check the onward road and transport for the specific forest or lake section. Jiu Zhi Ze and Cuifeng Lake are not adjacent stops.
