About Zhiben Hot Springs & Forest Recreation Area
Zhiben (知本) combines a hot-spring settlement with a separate forest recreation area inland from Taitung. Hot water emerging around the Zhiben River supported public bathing during the Japanese period and later a concentration of spa hotels. The forest park adds a warm, humid low-elevation woodland environment to that valley setting.
The forestry authority identifies banyans, large vines and other broadleaf vegetation as characteristic of the park, which ranges from roughly 110 to 650 metres above sea level. Aerial roots and the interaction of climbing plants with trees make the forest's structure particularly interesting. The giant white-banyan landscape is a recognised symbol of the area.
A spa visit and a forest walk therefore offer different ways of experiencing Zhiben. The former depends on a chosen bathing establishment, while the latter involves the recreation area's entrance and path system. Plan them as two components, allowing for the distance between facilities, rather than assuming a hot-spring hotel booking includes access to all nearby woodland or river sites.
