About Zuojhen Fossil Park
Zuojhen Fossil Park introduces the fossil discoveries of the Cailiao River basin in eastern Tainan. The museum complex brings together the former Cailiao Fossil Museum, natural-history education and the Guangrong school setting. Its purpose is to connect local finds with scientific investigation and public learning.
The area's significance became widely recognised through geological work in the 1930s. Geologist Ichiro Hayasaka collected deer-antler fossils in the basin, with local collector Chen Chun-mu helping to gather material that included ancient elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo remains. This history shows how local knowledge and academic research contributed to understanding Taiwan's past environments.
In the displays, focus on the evidence a specimen can provide: a tooth, antler or bone can suggest an animal's identity, while its geological context helps explain the environment in which it was preserved. Compare actual specimens, models and explanatory reconstructions according to their labels. The park is a museum visit rather than permission to collect fossils from nearby streams; the landscape's scientific value depends on keeping finds and their context together.
