About Gampa La Pass Yamdrok Lake Viewpoint
The municipal tourism bureau's account is built around the fact that Yamdrok cannot be taken in from its own shore. In the strict sense, it writes, the lake does not much resemble a lake — in places it is like a flowing river, in others it joins into a sheet — and it is that fragmentation that gives the water its character. A wider view needs height, it says, and it names the Gampa La pass as the route by which most visitors come. From 4,790 metres, it says, the lake reads as a long blue ribbon. The bureau is candid about the alternative: on the conventional one-day trip, the descent from Gampa La to the lakeside looks ordinary to it, for want of variation in the shoreline.
A Tibet Business Daily report carried by the regional government in February 2025, with text and pictures by the journalist Zhang Lin, describes the approach after a snowfall. Crossing a peak of nearly 5,000 metres brings the visitor to the first Yamdrok viewpoint, high enough for the whole lake to be taken in and for it to be seen ringed by snow mountains; a second viewpoint further on stands closer to the water, near enough, the report says, to hear the yaks at the lakeside. On that February visit the lake showed a deeply saturated blue, the peaks on either side were white, the snow ranges made a natural line between sky and water, and black yaks were feeding along the shore.
Two limits should be stated rather than left to inference. Neither cited source names or numbers a built viewing platform at Gampa La, so the relation between the bureau's pass and the newspaper's first and second viewpoints is not something either page settles. And neither page assigns the pass to a county: the catalogue files this record under Gonggar County, while both sources place the lake itself in Nagarze County.
What to look for
- The view from the Gampa La pass, which the Shannan municipal tourism bureau puts at 4,790 metres and from which it describes the lake as a long blue ribbon
- The branching form of Yamdrok itself, which the bureau says is in places like a flowing river and in others joined into a sheet
- The first viewpoint described by Tibet Business Daily, reached after crossing a peak of nearly 5,000 metres, from which the lake is seen whole and ringed by snow mountains
- The second viewpoint, closer to the water, where the same report places yaks at the lakeside
