About Green Lake Park

The Wuhua District government traces the site to the Yuan dynasty, when it was known as Caihaizi; a second name, Jiulongchi, came from nine springs in the pool on Bamboo Grove Island at the east side of the lake, which were said to join and form a pond. Two causeways cross the water and divide it into four parts: the north-south Ruandi, paid for in 1834 by Ruan Yuan, and the east-west Tangdi, paid for in 1919 by Tang Jiyao. Where the two meet there is a small central island built around the Huxin pavilion, also called Biyi pavilion, whose two inner courtyards are used for exhibitions. The municipal parks bureau lists Shuiyuexuan, Haixinting, Jiulongchi, Guanyulou, the Lianhua Chan temple, Southwest Island and Bamboo Grove Island among the park's features, and records it as a national AAAA-grade tourist area administered by the Wuhua District government.

In winter the park becomes a gull site. The district government records thousands of red-billed gulls arriving from the north each November to overwinter on the lake and leaving again in March or April for north-east China and Siberia, and notes municipal rules forbidding anyone to catch the birds or to set off firecrackers that would startle them.

  • Jiulongchi and Bamboo Grove Island on the east side, the nine springs that gave the lake its older name
