About Dounan Flower Market
The Kunming International Flower Auction Trading Center was established in 2001 with the approval of the National Development and Reform Commission and the Yunnan provincial government, and its first sale of Yunnan flowers fell on 20 December 2002. Zhang Li, who held the gavel at that first sale, later recalled that the opening price ran 30 per cent below the normal price and put the weak bidding down to the descending-price format. At the time of the account the auction house was moving 4 to 4.5 million stems a day, in more than 40 categories and more than 1,500 varieties, sold to more than 40 countries and regions. Grading underpins the system: in 2013 the centre issued a set of quality-grade standards for auctioned cut flowers, covering general requirements and separate requirements for single-head roses, single-head carnations and gerberas, which the Ministry of Commerce later adopted as ministerial standards.
The market is more than the auction floor. Yunnan Daily reported that cut-flower trading at Dounan in 2022 passed 11 billion stems, up 7.6 per cent on the year, with turnover above 12.1 billion yuan, up 8.04 per cent, and that seven of every ten cut flowers circulating on the Chinese market come from Dounan. At the market on 16 January 2023 the reporter saw buyers picking over phalaenopsis, cymbidium, lilies and roses among the flowers then in season.
