About Black Dragon Pool Park

The district government traces the site to a Black Water Shrine first built in the Western Han, giving it more than 2,100 years of history and describing it as older than the Tang-dynasty founding of Kunming's Tuodong city by 870 years; the municipal parks bureau gives the same shrine and the same 870-year span but puts the age at more than 2,000 years. The park covers 91.4 hectares and was rated a national AAA-grade tourist scenic area in 2016. The parks bureau lists ten main scenic points within it, among them Longquan Tanmei, Longtan Wenmi, Juangu Naochun, Guta Yinfeng and Hanci Sugu. It holds 20 old and notable trees more than 500 years old and more than a hundred over a century old, which the district government says is why the park is also known as Kunming's 'museum of old and notable trees'.

In 1991 the park opened a mountain-and-water plum garden, which the district government counts among China's ten leading plum gardens and describes as a south-west China plum-blossom research base; in 2016 'Longquan Tan Mei', plum-viewing at Longquan, was rated a provincial intangible-cultural-heritage protection item. The park's azalea valley holds 300,000 azaleas of various colours that bloom in late spring, described by the district government as one of the country's key azalea gardens. Across the year the park offers azaleas in spring, shade in summer, maple leaves in autumn and plum blossom in winter.
