About Jianshui Ancient City
According to Jianshui county government, the city has been built up since the Tang dynasty and is traditionally known as 'the Zoulu of southern Yunnan' and 'a land of literature and documents'. Its Confucius Temple, Chaoyang Tower, Zhu's Garden and the outlying Tuanshan ancient village are named as internationally known landmarks among the city's scattered old bridges, pagodas, wells and streets, and the city holds national Historic and Cultural City status and National Key Scenic Area status.
The county's own historic-city protection regulation, first adopted in 1996 and amended in 2002, defines the old-city protection zone as running from Shiqiao (Stone Bridge) along Chaoyang East Road to Chaoyang West Road, turning onto Qingyuan Road and the ring road south back to Shiqiao along the railway, and including the traditional streetscape of Mashi Street and Randengsi Street. The regulation names key protected objects including Chaoyang Tower, the Confucius Temple, Zhilin Temple, Randeng Temple, Zhu's Garden, the former Imperial Examination Hall, Yuhuang Pavilion, Tuzhu Temple, Chongzheng Academy, Xiaogui Lake, Yanzi Cave, Yunlongshan Temple, Donglin Temple, Chongwen Academy, Shuanglong Bridge, Tianyuan Bridge, Daxin Bridge, Wenbi Pagoda, the old kiln site at Wanyao village, the Naloujia chieftain office, Zhang Family Garden, Huanglong Temple, Heilong Pool and Dongshanba Dongtan, subject to tiered legal protection.
