About Golden Temple

The scenic area covers 1,773 mu on the mountain, 7 kilometres from the city centre, and combines the bronze hall and a Ming-dynasty city wall known as the Forbidden City with other Ming-Qing buildings and 12 themed botanical zones. In 1982 the State Council published Taihe Palace Golden Hall as a national key cultural relic protection unit, and in 2001 the scenic area was placed in the first batch of national AAAA-grade scenic areas; it has also been named a Yunnan provincial and Kunming municipal science-popularisation base and a patriotic-education base, and in 2016 it received the title International Camellia Garden of Excellence. The parks bureau describes the bronze hall as the largest surviving bronze building in China, while the district government calls the Ming-dynasty city wall the smallest in diameter and the most complete of its kind.

The mountain holds more than 4,000 old and notable trees, with a further 3,000 held in reserve stock, and each year from January to March more than 400,000 camellia trees come into bloom, in a display the parks bureau describes as making Yunnan's camellias unrivalled. The Golden Temple temple fair, held on the ninth day of the first lunar month, is a Yunnan provincial intangible-cultural-heritage item with more than 400 years of history, when visitors flock up the mountain to view the camellias, watch lantern shows and lion and dragon dances, and eat Kunming snacks among the trees.
