About Mengku Ancient Tea Gardens
Shuangjiang's ancient tea gardens are distributed across the county's villages, concentrated in the Mengku, Mengmeng, Shahe, Mangnuo, Dawen and Bangbing areas. The wild ancient tea tree community on Mengku's Daxue Mountain covers 12,700 mu, with trees over a thousand years old, found in primeval forest between 2,200 m and 2,750 m elevation; it is described by Lincang Daily as the world's largest-area, highest-elevation and highest-density wild ancient tea tree community discovered to date. In 2015 the 'Shuangjiang Mengku Ancient Tea Gardens and Tea Culture System' was recognised as a China Important Agricultural Heritage System.
Bingdao, within Mengku, is among the earliest places in Shuangjiang with cultivated tea trees; the county protects the ancient tea trees of the five Bingdao hamlets to preserve their genetic diversity.
