About Xichou National Stone Desert Park
The park was one of four Yunnan parks among 17 national desert/stone-desert parks approved by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, covering a planned area of 2,404.9 hectares within Xingjie township.
The park sits within a county that was 99.9% mountainous with 75.4% of its land historically affected by rocky desertification; after the county set a 1985 goal to reforest the land within 30 years, decades of afforestation and hillside closure transformed bare stone hills into forest. In the Sanguang demonstration area, forest cover rose from 25% to 66.66%, now rated a national AAAA-grade tourist attraction with kiwifruit and ecological farming industries worth more than 30 million yuan a year. The stone desert park itself draws weekend and holiday visitors who come to view the hills.
