About Zixi Mountain
According to the Chuxiong municipal government's own A-grade scenic-area profile, the ridge spans 15 kilometres north to south with 18 peaks and 9 large ravines; its highest peak, Weixi Peak, reaches 2,502 metres, and its lowest point, Majinghe Gorge, is 1,900 metres, a difference of over 600 metres. The area has a north-subtropical plateau monsoon climate and records 107 wildlife species and over 1,300 plant species. Seven of Yunnan's traditional 'eight famous flowers' grow here, and the source singles out camellia and rhododendron as a particular feature of the mountain, recording more than 160 camellia trees over a century old and over 200 camellia varieties. In 2012, Chuxiong hosted the 'China·Chuxiong 2012 International Camellia Conference'.
Development of the scenic area began in 1992, and it now comprises 25 built sites, including the Yunnan Camellia Species Garden, the Wansong ('Ten Thousand Pines') Forest and Xiangguo Garden. It is rated a National Forest Park, a national AAAA-grade tourist attraction and a provincial scenic area.
