Fangyan Scenic Area 方岩

Fangyan in Yongkang combines a steep mountain landscape with the summit shrine of Hu Gong, the locally revered Northern Song official Hu Ze.

About Fangyan Scenic Area

A sequence of mountain steps leads towards Tianmen, a large stone arch, with Tianjie beyond and Hu Gong Shrine at the summit. The shrine’s red-faced, black-bearded figure recalls the official whose commemoration became a local religious tradition.

Worship at Fangyan developed into a temple fair centred on ying’an processions. These traditionally bring a portable Hu Gong image together with martial-arts groups, music and dance, connecting the mountain shrine with communities in the surrounding area.
