About Meicheng Ancient Town
Meicheng is the historic town associated with Yanzhou in present-day Jiande, west of Hangzhou. Its setting near the meeting of the Xin'an, Lan and Fuchun rivers helps explain its former importance as an administrative centre and river port. A visit combines old-town streets with the larger river landscape that supported trade and communication.
Yanzhou was a regional name with a much wider historical territory than the present visitor district. Meicheng's streets, town defences and waterfront should therefore be read as parts of a former seat of government, rather than as the whole of historic Yanzhou. The town's name is traditionally connected with plum-blossom-shaped battlements; this is a naming tradition, not a description of the complete town plan.
Start with a public street circuit and continue towards a signed waterfront viewpoint. Looking back from the river makes the relationship between settlement and transport easier to understand. Use heritage labels to distinguish surviving fabric from repaired walls and renewed storefronts, and treat residences and working shops as part of the present town. A reconstructed facade alone cannot establish the age of the building behind it.
What to look for
- The former Yanzhou town setting within modern Jiande.
- The relationship between the old streets and a three-river meeting area.
- Town-wall interpretation and the local tradition behind the name Meicheng.
