About Qinghefang Historic District
Qinghefang is a historic commercial district in Hangzhou, associated with the city's role as the Southern Song capital. Its streets combine shops, restaurants and traditional trades, with the present visitor environment also reflecting restoration carried out in 2002. The district is a place to explore commercial culture rather than a surviving street frozen in one historical period.
Hangzhou's official introduction identifies businesses associated with fans, scissors, traditional medicine and food, including Wangxingji, Zhang Xiaoquan, Hu Qing Yu Tang and Fang Hui Chun Tang. Looking at these different trades gives the walk more substance than browsing souvenirs alone. Individual businesses and museum interiors have their own arrangements.
Choose one trade that interests you and use it to organise a short walk through the surrounding lanes. Compare signs, storefronts and the way commercial activity occupies the restored streets. Hu Xueyan's former residence is a separate property; visiting a pharmacy associated with him does not mean you have visited his home.
What to look for
- Historic trading streets shaped by Hangzhou’s commercial past and later restoration.
- Fan, scissors and traditional-pharmacy businesses associated with the district.
- The difference between a public street visit and separately managed cultural interiors.
