About Xixi Wetland
Xixi Wetland is a network of waterways, vegetation and cultural landscapes in western Hangzhou. Its character combines urban wetland conservation with traces of farming and settlement. It is distinct from West Lake: instead of one broad lake panorama, the visit follows smaller channels, embankments and changing views through plants and water margins.
The city's official introduction identifies the Fu, Lyu and Shou embankments and scenes associated with reeds, fishing villages, plum blossom and dragon-boat traditions. These names reflect different aspects of the wetland rather than a checklist of features visible in every season. The relationship between water, land use and local culture is the more consistent theme.
Choose a named entrance and a manageable walking or boat route. Boats and footpaths reveal different parts of the landscape, and a through-route may finish away from your starting point. Watch quietly from designated areas, keep to the embankments and treat seasonal flowers or wildlife as possibilities rather than guaranteed components of the visit.
What to look for
- Water channels and planted margins that differ from the open scenery of West Lake.
- The named embankments and their relationship to the wetland’s visitor routes.
- Cultural traces of fishing, farming and local seasonal traditions.
