About Huaniao Island
At the island's northwestern edge, Huaniao Lighthouse is a round, four-storey structure built with brick and iron. It was enlarged in several stages after its original construction and became an important navigation landmark for ships approaching the Yangtze estuary and ports including Shanghai, Zhoushan and Ningbo.
The village reflects a more recent chapter. Tourism development gathered pace from 2013, bringing adapted guesthouse areas, a leisure street and artists' workspaces into an island economy previously centred on fishing. The lighthouse and these lived-in village spaces show different periods of Huaniao's relationship with the sea.
