About Nanbei Lake
The central causeway, Zhonghutang, gives the place its name: North and South Lake. Bailuzhou lies in the northern water, while the southern lake contains Hudie Island, an artificial island with the Shanhai Pavilion. Their small-scale islands, bridges and reflections form a sheltered landscape below the surrounding ridges.
Above the lakes, Yunxiu Temple sits on the hillside; its present halls were restored in 1983. The two entrance gates carry calligraphy by the garden scholar Chen Congzhou and the Buddhist leader Zhao Puchu. Stone steps continue toward Yingke Peak and its two lookouts. These offer a broader sense of the lake-and-coast setting, although reclamation has moved the shoreline away from the foot of the hills.
