About Shibawo Potholes

Field investigators describe a V-shaped valley and circular or elliptical hollows in the bedrock. Water carrying sand and gravel swirls at joints in the rock, gradually scouring these depressions; some elongated hollows follow the direction of the current. The relationship between flowing water, fractured rock and the shapes of the pools is the central feature of this landscape.

What to look for

  • Circular and elliptical potholes in the streambed, especially around rapids and waterfall drops.
  • The V-shaped Jiaxi valley surrounding the rock-cut pools.
