About Shimendong Scenic Area
The name, meaning Stone Gate, refers to Qi and Gu peaks facing one another like the sides of a gateway. Upstream cascades and pools lead toward the main Shimen Waterfall, which drops from a high cliff enclosed by steep rock walls. The surrounding woodland connects the water scenery with the river landscape.
Cliff-carved poems and commemorative stelae record generations of cultural interest in this place. Named bridges and Liu Wencheng Shrine add to the waterfall core, while Bowen Village, also known as Dongbei, forms a separate part of the wider scenic area. Together they give Shimendong a cultural geography that extends beyond its main waterfall.
